Q&A with Rachelle Gutierrez

When it comes to food safety, Rachelle Gutierrez is our expert. She’s the one making sure every snack you enjoy from Fruit For Thought meets the highest standards. Her day? It’s a mix of training, audits, swabbing, chemical testing, and documenting – all the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our products safe and delicious. 

We sat down with Rachelle and asked her questions about quality control, the fruit drying process, and the process of achieving food and farming certifications. 

 

Q: What does “as close to nature as possible” mean for Fruit For Thought products? 

I’d say there’s two simple and foundational principles that we adhere to in supporting this claim. 

First, single-ingredient snacks. Our dried fruits contain only one ingredient: the fruit itself. No added sugar, preservatives, colors, or artificial additives. As they state, "if it wasn't there when the pineapple was picked, it won't be there when you pop a slice." 

Second, premium sourcing. For over 50 years, the Sigona family has partnered with trusted growers to deliver farm-stand quality and flavor. 

  

Q: Why are certifications like Organic, Non-GMO, and Kosher important? 

These certifications give consumers confidence in quality and sourcing and help them make informed choices about their food. They reflect our commitment to clean, minimally processed dried fruits and nuts, free from synthetic additives or genetic modification, while supporting health, ethical agriculture, and consumer trust. 

 

Q: Does drying fruit affect nutrition values? 

Yes, but we use a method that ensures most nutrients remain intact. While some vitamins are heat-sensitive, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and polyphenols are largely preserved. Fruit For Thought uses low-temperature, slow drying to protect delicate compounds and maintain natural flavor and texture. 

 

Q: What would you say sets Fruit For Thought apart from other brands? 

There are quite a few things that set us apart. Our founders’ heritage and expertise helped us build strong relationships with the growers we have today and a reputation for uncompromising quality. We also have strict standards. Our products meet global food safety, Non-GMO, and Organic guidelines. And the most important (and most fun!) is sensory testing. Our team evaluates products daily to ensure they meet the expectations of the most discerning customer. 

  

Q: How do you and the quality team support our dried fruit and nut company's innovation? 

We are a small team, so most of us, from our director down, have the quality of our products in mind. Quality is embedded in every step, from concept to production. We ensure compliance with food safety and ingredient integrity standards, maintain full traceability from farm to table for consumer protection, and collaborate with suppliers and stay current on evolving regulations. 

Our goal: every product reflects our promise of natural, minimally processed snacks that deliver farm-stand quality!
